Pune | Aundh – Baner residents oppose Kothrud-Pashan tunnel

Deccan Express: Pune – Residents of Pashan, Aundh, and Baner area along with 13 different volunteer groups have opposed the proposed tunnel connecting Kothrud-Pashan.

Pune Municipal Corporation has proposed a tunnel from Sutardara area of Kothrud to Panchavati area in Pashan. The project will cost around Rs 250 Cr. The aim is to reduce traffic on road and make the journey convenient for citizens who regularly travel between stretches,

However, various resident forums and other organizations have opposed the move. Deccan Gymkhana Parisar Samitee, Environment Club of India, Pune Jilha Housing Federation, Panchavati Utkarsha Seva Sanstha, Vetal Tekadi Friends Group, Udan for change, and many more volunteer groups have opposed the move.

According to these organizations and residents anyways there will be metro service connecting Vanaz – Ramwadi and Hinjewadi o Shivajinagar which will cater to the citizens and visitors traveling between the same stretch for which PMC is planning to build the tunnel. Also, the tunnel work will affect the biodiversity of the area through which the tunnel will pass.

As per reports, PMC officials informed that the tunnel is included in the Development Plan and there will be survey and after approval of the survey the work will start.

Ten days ago, government authorities had declared that the tunnel work will start on priority. On June 19, A District Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar and Mayor Mohol reviewed the tunnel work. MLA Siddharth Shirole, Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, City Engineer Prashant Waghmare, Chief Engineer Srinivas Bonala was present during the meeting were also present for the meeting.

According to PMC, the current distance from Kothrud to Pashan is 8.5 Km via Chandni Chowk and the same distance is 9.5 Km via Senapati Bapat Road. The proposed tunnel will reduce the distance by four kilometers.

There is another tunnel planned by the civic body that will connect Pashan and Gokhalenagar. According to PMC the distance between these two places is 4.5 Km and the tunnel will reduce this distance up to 2.9 Km. Residents are opposing this tunnel too.

Presently, PMC is in the process of changing the consultant has been started. Previously appointed consultant for this work won’t be there due to the delay in work.
