Pune : deccan express  –  The fresh omicron restrictions have cast their shadow over two events to be held on January 1, 2022. The district administration is in a dilemma over the organisation of these two programmes i.e. the commemoration of the battle of Koregaon Bhima and the bullock cart race in Pune district.

On January 1 of every year, millions of people throng Victory Tower at Perne Phata in Haveli taluka for paying a tribute to the martyrs. While the district administration was gearing up for the event, the State has imposed fresh omicron restrictions.

In case of bullock cart races, following the Supreme Court directives, District Collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh also gave permission to organise the first bullock cart race in Pune district on January 1.

However, with the State imposing fresh restrictions, due to the fear of spreading of omicron infection, the district administration is in two minds about the programme.

The Vijay Stambh tribute programme was held online and broadcast on television for two consecutive years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the crisis of coronavirus subsided this year; consequently, the State gave permission to start all schools and colleges. Taking a cue, the district administration was planning to ensure that it would pass peacefully.

Deshmukh has been personally monitoring the entire process to ensure that these two functions are held smoothly. However, a couple of days ago, the state government imposed fresh omicron restrictions in the entire state, including Pune. Hence, it has yet to come to any conclusion if these are to be held or should be cancelled.

Looking at the fact that both these events attract a huge crowd, the district administration has asked the State to provide further guidelines in the wake of the new restrictions.
