Pune : deccan express The company appointed to recover toll on Pune-Mumbai Expressway has claimed that around 11,000 vehicles pass on the e-way without paying the toll in spite of stringent monitoring.

The Sajag Nagrik Manch (SNM) has demanded a probe into dealings of the company and officials of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which is responsible for the work.

MSRDC has been instructed to publish daily on its website the number of vehicles passing through its toll booths and the toll money collected. Thus, figures are daily published in this regard. Data of December 2021 has been published on MSRDC website. It claimed that 11,000 vehicles pass on the e-way without paying the toll.

Over 3.30 lakh vehicles did not pay the toll during December 2021 on the expressway. These vehicles include concessions and rule violations. However, exact numbers under these two categories have not been mentioned purposely, claimed the SNM.

Vehicles exempted from the toll
Ambulances, police vehicles, cars of MLAs, MPs and judges do not have to pay the toll. In all, 1,850 buses, 5,193 trucks, 5,086 multi-axle trucks and 20,196 LCVs did not pay the tax during December 2021.
Commuters travelling on Pune-Mumbai Expressway would tell that nobody can pass through these booths without paying the toll. In this backdrop, it is a suspicious claim that over 3.30 lakh vehicles did not pay the toll, said the SNM.

It is surprising that officials monitoring the website do not find the data improper. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray should order a probe into this matter, demanded SNM president Vivek Velankar.

Letter to the chief minister
Velankar has written a letter to CM Uddhav Thackeray in this connection. He has demanded, in the letter, that the CM should instruct officials to mention how many vehicles were exempted and how many violated the rule. The issue of toll evasion appears to be suspicious. Hence, officials and the contractor should be taken to task, demanded the NGO.
