Pune : Deccan Express – Sharad Pawar | The Brahmin community has rejected the invitation extended by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar to discuss the alleged criticism that Pawar is anti-Brahmin. This the first such invitation given by Pawar in the past 40 years. However, no office-bearer of the Brahmin Mahasabha would attend the meeting, said its president Anand Dave.
“Sharad Pawar has invited us for a meeting. However, this is not a proper time to meet him at a public forum. Meeting him would widen the rift. Hence, we have rejected the offer. Pradeep Garatkar is mediating for the meeting. He is in touch with Brahmin associations. He has asked us to meet Pawar and explain the reason of our displeasure,” he said.
Reasons for rejecting the invitation
Dave said that the reasons behind rejecting Pawar’s offer include Pawar’s reluctance to tell MLA Amol Mitkari to take back his words. On the contrary, Pawar narrated the anecdote of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj pulling up an astrologer. At the same forum, State Minister Chhagan Bhujbal criticized the community saying they are doing business of priesthood (not a profession). He gave a wrong example of reservations.
It could have raised Sharad Pawar’s stature
Dave said Pawar should have pardoned Ketaki Chitale for her derogatory post. She was definitely wrong. He should have asked NCP workers to withdraw cases filed against her. This would have raised his stature. Nearly 28 cases have been filed against Ketaki. However, not a single offence has been registered against Mitkari. It is not decent to criticize a dead person. Pawar criticized Babasaheb Purandare.
“Pawar should make his stand clear on remarks made by Bhujbal and Mitkari. We are not personally against Pawar. The Brahmins in his constituency have no complaints against him. However, he used the community for his political ends,” said Dave.
