Pune : Deccan Express – Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) | The monsoon onset is a few weeks away. However, pre-monsoon works in the city have still not been sped up. Not even half of the works are complete. Road tenders have not been floated. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Vikram Kumar has asked the three additional municipal commissioners to monitor the works. He expressed confidence that they would be completed by June 15.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) cleans nullahs, storm water drains, drainage lines and chambers. Debris and other solid waste is cleared. Potholes are filled and layering of roads is done every year. These works start in April and are completed before the rainy season. Contractors file their bids at lower rates. Usually, they are approved. Their bills are paid after the completion of works. However, even medium showers cause flooding and chambers start overflowing, roads get inundated. This raises a question mark over pre-monsoon works done by contractors. It is always criticized that bills are paid for works not done. Civic officials, corporators and contractors are blamed for this. It was hoped this year, since the administrator is at the helm, that works would be expedited. However, the same old apathy continues.
“Old and new nullahs run into 647 kms in the new and old city limits. They have 742 culverts and bunds on them. It is claimed that 97 km of nullahs and 221 culverts have been cleaned. There are 325 km storm water drains with 55,300 chambers on them. Of these 102 kms of drains and 22,954 chambers have been cleaned. The three additional municipal commissioners have been entrusted to expedite works before the deadline. They will be done before June 15. Priority is given to works, where there is a danger of flooding. These works will be completed on time,” said Vikram Kumar, Municipal Commissioner and Administration
