Pune: The Pune-based man was booked for allegedly divorcing his 22 year old wife through triple talaq over phone. The family members of the man have also been booked for allegedly harassing her for dowry.
According to the statement of the woman, given to Mumbai police, she got married in 2016 in Pydhonie after which she shifted to the groom’s Pune residence and he is currently working as a delivery man with a pharmaceutical company.
The woman in her complaint said that at the time of their wedding, the groom’s parents had demanded Rs 5 lakh but after negotiation, it was settled at Rs 3 lakh, which was paid through cash and cheque. She has alleged since their marriage, family members of the groom have been taunting her. She further said her in-laws would make her do all household work,’ said an officer from Pydhonie police station.
According to officers, the woman and her husband would frequently fight over his long working hours. She also accused him of assaulting her during her pregnancy. In May 2020, she came back to her parents’ residence in Pydhonie and during one of their phone conversations on June 12, the woman alleged that there was a heated argument between them when her husband pronounced talaq three times.

Triple Talaq Act makes the instant triple talaq a criminal offence and provides for a jail term of three years for a Muslim man who commits the crime. According to Clause 3 in Chapter 2 of the Bill, “any pronouncement of talaq by a person upon his wife, by words, either spoken or written or in electronic form or in any other manner whatsoever, shall be void and illegal”.
