Congress MP Vasanthakumar Dies of Coronavirus At 70

New Delhi: Congress MP representing to Kanyakumari constituency has passes away. Vasanthakumar had tested positive for coronavirus earlier and was admitted at Chennai’s Apollo Hospital since August 10. He had been in a critical condition after contracting pneumonia and was on ventilator support. The 70-year-old Congress MP represented the Kanyakumari constituency in Lok Sabha.

He was the founder and chairman of Vasanth & Co, the largest retail home appliance chain in Tamil Nadu. He was also the founder and managing director of the Tamil satellite TV channel Vasanth TV. First-time MP after winning the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Vasanthakumar had previously served as the Nanguneri MLA in the Tamil Nadu assembly from 2006-2011 and 2016-2019.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he defeated BJP leader Pon Radhakrishnan by a huge margin of 2.59 lakh votes. Tributes poured in for H Vasanthakumar from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress as well as several party members on Twitter.

Condoling Vasanthakumar’s death, PM Modi tweeted, “Saddened by the demise of Lok Sabha MP Shri H. Vasanthakumar Ji. His strides in business and social service efforts were noteworthy. During my interactions with him, I always saw his passion towards Tamil Nadu’s progress. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”

“We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Shri H. Vasanthakumar. A staunch Congressman, true leader of the people and beloved MP. He will be sorely missed by all members of the Congress party and his followers. Our prayers are with his family in this time of grief,” the Congress said in a statement. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the untimely demise of H Vasanthakumar came as a “shock”. “The news of Kanyakumari MP, Shri H Vasanthakumar’s untimely demise due to Covid-19 has come as a shock. His commitment to the Congress ideology of serving the people will remain in our hearts forever. Heartfelt condolences to his friends and family members,” he wrote.
