Pune | Woman, minor daughter get justice after 29 years; Bombay High Court sentences husband to three years’ rigorous imprisonment

Pune : deccan expressThe Bombay High Court has found a man guilty of forcing his wife and minor daughter to end their life 29 years ago and sentenced him to three years’ rigorous imprisonment. The woman has got the justice 29 years after her death.

 

Ramdas Dhondu Kalatkar is the name of the convicted husband. Janabai Kalatkar had died by suicide with her young daughter on October 9, 1992. According to the available information, Janabai had two daughters. The elder daughter died suddenly and Janabai had gone to her parents’ house.

 

After she returned, she found that her husband Ramdas was living with another woman named Bharti. She started living with Ramdas and Bharti. After some time, Janabai’s in-laws and Bharti started harassing her.

 

Janabai had informed her parents about the insults and the humiliating treatment that was being given to her. Janabai’s parents tried to convince her husband and her in-laws but they continued to harass her.

 

Fed with the harassment, Janabai with her daughter died by suicide by jumping into a well. Janabai’s brother registered a case against her husband and mother-in-law for provoking Janabai to commit suicide.

 

The sessions court in Pune convicted the three accused and sentenced her husband to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and Bharti to six months’ simple imprisonment. Her mother-in-law died during the trial.

 

Later, both the accused challenged the verdict in the high court. The court announced the verdict 29 years after the incident happened. The court has upheld the verdict of the sessions court and Janabai’s husband has been sentenced to jail. However, some years ago, Bharti passed away.
