Mumbai : Twelve farmers died by suicide in the Nagpur district during corona period. After investigating all these cases, the government provides financial assistance to the eligible farmers. However, social activist Abhay Kolarkar has pointed out that not a single farmer has received financial assistance as all inquiries from the Corona period are pending.
According to the Nagpur District Collector’s Office, 20 farmers died by suicide in the district between January 1 and July 31, 2020. Out of this, 12 farmers have ended their life during the lockdown period from March to July. The government provides financial assistance to farmers who have died by suicide due to financial hardship by investigating the causes of these suicides. But the investigation into any case of suicide during the lockdown has not been completed. As all the cases are pending, no one has received financial help from the government. So when will this inquiry be completed? This question is being asked by the families of deceased farmers.
In Nagpur district, 812 farmers have ended their life from 2001 to 2020-July. Except for 14 cases in 2020, all other inquiries have been completed. Of these, 302 cases are eligible for financial assistance and 496 cases are ineligible. The government has provided assistance of Rs. 3 crore 2 lakhs to the families of all the eligible farmers. The RTI also revealed that 82 farmers committed suicide in 2008, 73 in 2006, 66 in 2016, 65 in 2007, 63 in 2010, 61 in 2014, 58 in 2009, 56 in 2019 and 55 in 2015.
Most suicides in January
Nagpur district had the highest number of suicides in 2020 with six in January. This is followed by 5 suicides in June, 2 in February, 3 in March, 2 in April and 2 in May. Of the six cases in January, five have been investigated and two have been declared eligible and three ineligible. The government has also provided Rs 2 lakh to the families of two eligible farmers.
