New Delhi : Hindi is also included in the top five languages spoken by Americans of Asian descent. An eminent expert has given this information. Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC) President and Executive Director John Yang told members of the Senate, Home Office and Government Action Committee that what is often omitted in the broader version of the minority myth are the inequalities created by the lack of linguistic access.
He said that about two-thirds of the Asian American population are immigrants, of which 52 percent of Asian American immigrants have limited English proficiency. “The rate of limited English proficiency (LEP) varies greatly among Asian American communities,” Yang said. The top languages spoken by Asian immigrants are Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Korean and Hindi.
He told lawmakers that Myanmar’s immigrants have the highest LEP rate among Asian Americans at 79 percent and noted that even among Asian American immigrant groups with low LEP rates, nearly a third of the population has difficulties communicating in English.”
Yang said Asian Americans have faced tremendous financial difficulties during the pandemic, despite popular misconceptions, including misleading surveys that excluded Asian Americans with limited English proficiency.
He said, “The devastating health and financial impact on the Asian-American community is the result of hatred against Asian people. We have seen racist harassment and violence against Asian Americans who have been unfairly blamed for COVID-19 since the outbreak of the pandemic.”
