Pune: The hostel department of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has ordered its last year students to vacate their rooms by October 3. The SPPU administration also threatened to throw out the belongings of such students who do not vacate their rooms by the deadline.

This arbitrary decision by the Pune University has angered students. Already students are facing a tough time over the mode of examination. Students are also worried about how to appear for exams in view of the Covid-19 outbreak in the state.

The recent circular by the SPPU has created confusion in the minds of students about the security of their belongings. Students left behind their belongings while stepping out of the premises at the onset of the sudden lockdown in March. SPPU Registrar Dr Prafulla Pawar has clarified that the deadline will be extended. He urged students who can easily come and take away their belongings.

When the lockdown was announced, the SPPU administration asked the students to vacate the premises. Students left for their native place with a few and selected items. Most of the students had left behind their laptops, books and other educational certificates, documents at the hostel rooms.

On this background, the Pune University administration issued a circular on September 25. It says that university has to make plans for the admissions to hostels for the next academic year. Hence, last year students should vacate their rooms till October 3. Most of the students are at their native and distant places like Marathwada and Vidarbha. It is not possible for them to collect their belongings and make alternative arrangements. These students contacted the SPPU administration. But they recieved unsatisfactory answers about the issue.

Dr Pawar said, “The new hostel admissions will start soon. Hence the administration will be sanitising rooms and premises. We appeal to students to move their belongings at the earliest. If it is not possible for some students then this deadline will be extended for them.”
