Kolhapur : deccan express – The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday arrested two police constables attached to the Local Crime Branch in Kolhapur district in a Rs 25-lakh bribe case.
Vijay Kerba Karande (50), a resident of Uchgaon, Karveer taluka, and Kiran Dhondiram Gawde, (37), a resident of Kedarnagar Morewadi of Karveer taluka, demanded the bribe from a youth arrested in a motorcycle theft. They threatened to take action under MCOCA against him and demanded the bribe. They demanded Rs 10 lakh as the first instalment.
According to the police, a lawyer’s son runs a business of old vehicle sales and purchase. He bought a second-hand sport bike a week ago from Panvel. He has a licence for scrapping two-wheelers. However, Karande and Gawde approached him. They told him that he was stealing bikes from Pune and Mumbai and was selling them in Kolhapur. They threatened to slap MCOCA on him in a motorcycle theft case. They also threatened to defame him. For not taking action, they demanded Rs 25 lakh.
They took the youth to the police commissionerate for interrogation. They told him that he would not be released till he paid Rs 25 lakh. He got frightened. He agreed to pay Rs 10 lakh. He then lodged a complaint with the ACB.
The ACB verified the complaint. Later, Karande and Gawde took a bag containing Rs 10 lakh from him. At that moment, they were caught red-handed. Money was seized.
The constables have been booked by the Shahupuri police.
The action was taken under the guidance of SP (ACB Pune) Rajesh Bansode, Addl SP Suraj Gurav, Addl SP Suhas Nadgauda and DySP Adinath Budhwant.
