Kalyan : Deccan Express | Kalyan-based famous builder Sanjay Gaikwad made headlines recently for buying a Rolls Royce car valued at Rs 8 crore. He again made headlines for all wrong reasons. He was booked in a power theft case.
Public power utility Mahadiscom lodged a complaint against the builder at the Mahatma Phule police station for stealing electricity at a building in Kalyan (East).
The complaint stated that power amounting to Rs 34,640 was stolen. However, Gaikwad promptly paid the said amount after the complaint was filed against him. He alleged it to be a conspiracy to defame him. He said, “These are wrong accusations. If power is stolen, then why is the power meter not taken away?”

Gaikwad said, “The money was outstanding not against a power theft but was a settlement charge. Power utility officials visited the premises to check a burnt phase. They noticed that a phase from the meter was bypassed. Hence, they took settlement charges, a bill for which was not received. I will file a defamation case against the public utility.”
What exactly happened
A flying squad of the power utility was checking power meters in Kalyan East in areas, including Amrai Tisgaon. They found the meter was bypassed and power was being stolen in March. A panchnama was conducted and a bill for power theft amounting to 34,840, along with the settlement charges of Rs 15,000, was issued to the builder. However, he failed to pay the bill before the deadline. Hence, the police complaint was lodged against him.
According to the complaint, a power theft case was filed against Gaikwad. He paid the bill and the settlement charges on Monday.
